Rongai Route – North Face Climb

Rongai Route – North Face Climb
Book the 6-day Rongai Route: an accelerated climb from the quieter, drier north face. Challenging ascent via Mawenzi Tarn to Uhuru Peak. JRO transfers included.

ITINERARY OVERVIEW

Swift Climb from the Remote North

The 6-Day Rongai Route is designed for the fit trekker who wants the unique benefits of the northern approach—it is drier and significantly less crowded—but requires a compressed schedule. This itinerary accelerates the climb by combining the acclimatization day, leading directly to the majestic Mawenzi Tarn. This route demands excellent fitness but rewards you with vast views of the plains of Kenya and a unique traverse of the Kibo Saddle before the final push to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft).

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a friendly GEOMURO TRAVEL representative will warmly greet you and provide a comfortable, shared transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Your accommodations are selected for comfort, featuring cozy rooms, reliable hot water, a swimming pool, and complimentary Internet access. In the early evening, you will meet with our managers and head guide for a comprehensive pre-climb briefing. We’ll finalize gear checks, review safety protocols, and outline the accelerated 6-day plan, ensuring you are mentally and physically ready for the challenge ahead.

Logistics Note: Private tour packages include shared airport transfers. Please coordinate your group’s arrival times to avoid additional individual transfer charges.

After breakfast, we drive to the remote Rongai Gate at Nale Moru on the north side. The initial trail cuts through a lighter, drier rainforest before opening into the heath zone. We climb steadily, enjoying the solitude of the northern approach, and set up camp at Simba Camp (9,300 ft) near First Cave, with magnificent views out over the plains of Kenya.

This is the critical, aggressive stage that defines the 6-day route. We climb high, passing the traditional Third Cave rest area, and trek into the rocky highlands. This long day takes us through stunning volcanic landscapes, leading to the exceptionally remote and beautiful Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,160 ft). This exposed campsite, nestled below the towering Mawenzi spires, tests your altitude adaptation but rewards you with breathtaking scenery.

We cross the vast, desolate, and high-altitude Kibo Saddle—an almost lunar landscape linking the two main peaks. The trek is challenging but visually rewarding. We arrive at Kibo Hut (15,430 ft), the exposed base camp at the foot of the summit cone. The afternoon is crucial for final preparations: organizing gear, hydrating, and resting for the midnight start.

The final test begins at midnight. We ascend slowly up the dark, steep scree, aiming for Gilman’s Point and ultimately Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) at sunrise. The view from the “Roof of Africa” is your ultimate reward. After the celebration, we begin the long descent back to Kibo Hut for a quick lunch and continue all the way down the Marangu side to Horombo Hut (12,205 ft) for a well-deserved, full night’s sleep.

  • Hiking: 7-9 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent (Total 12-16 hours)

  • Summit Altitude: approx. 19,341 ft.
